Songwriter Jackie Greene dramatically expands on his folk, country and blues roots in this release.
Greene says this is a deeply personal song cycle, and while the disc jump-starts with the rollicking "Cell Block # 9," his homage to Cash/Haggard, the thirteen-song effort is rather darkly felt. His nervy themes of betrayal, trust, loneliness and redemption through love feature Greene's fearless down-home vocals, stylish Mississippi John Hurt finger picking, rave-up Telecaster, beyond-Dylanesque harp playing and spot-on Hammond B-3 organ and piano expertise. A quintuple musical treat, Greene's complexities in both music and lyric require intelligent listening and yet his songs are drenched in everyman hook-laden melodies. Greene is definitely not green; this 2004 effort is startling mature, the brave next step of a consummate young artist.
