The big band era was relatively short-lived in the flow of 20th century history. However, it included World War ll, and to those who defended our country overseas, it represented “normal” life back at home. It was the way our music was supposed to sound.
Several members of The Rotary Rooters were actually making music in that era—not recreating it but living it. Their dedication to their music is evident in the fact that the Rooters play 50 to 60 gigs a year, playing without pay and footing their own expenses. All money earned goes to Rotary, while the band members are playing for the love of big band music
The Rooters' leader and arranger, Evans (Red) Clark is a wonder. At 85 he is sharp as a tack, does all arrangements on a computer, is extremely prolific and he MC’s the shows interspersing jokes between songs, with a perfect sense of timing.
The CD, and the accompanying DVD, are filled with favorites of the Big Band Era and was recorded recently in Sacramento, California. Ellington, Basie, Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Glenn Miller...Timeless songs played with heart!
The DVD is a documentary of the making of the CD. You can tell that these guys know what they're doing...and love what they're doing.
This band represents the tail end of the big band era, not in instrumentation, but in personnel and dedication to swing music as it was played so long ago.
