Subtlety and mystique seemed to be a dying art until Chris Webster brought them back together to deliver songs that completely captivate the listener. Chris has spent many a year stomping around as one of the lead singers with California Cajun Zydeco favorites, Mumbo Gumbo. She has struck out on her own with the previously released Drive and now Now Playing. This batch of songs came from a handful of live performances at The Palms Playhouse in Davis, CA, Chris' own stomping grounds. The significance is that not long after those shows, this longtime favorite venue was torn down - the sense of a sweet nostalgic goodbye rings true throughout the album. This recording successfully seats you in the audience watching a parade of Northern California's best musicians sitting in with Chris as she sings some new and previously recorded songs in her honest, lush and addicting subtle fashion. When Ms. Webster performed for Monterey Smooth Jazz audiences, she was met with great appreciation and surprise, selling more CDs than the headlining act. The bonus is that she is also an outstanding song writer. Her original tunes are as solid and affecting as her renditions of a very special selection of covers.
