Discography

  Title

Chris Webster's recent release on DIG Music is the cumulative total of her amazing pedigree, incredible achievements and love's lessons learned while traversing the swampy back-roads of Americana. Something In The Water also showcases Webster's rockin' five piece band plus special guest appearances from her talented friends including Jackie Greene, Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Darol Anger, and Scott Nygaard.

Praise continues to grow for Webster. She was most recently honored with the Gibson Guitar New Musician Award at this year's Hatch Festival in Bozeman, Montana. Over the years, Webster has played such legendary venues as The Fillmore (San Francisco), La Zona Rosa (Austin), and The Winnipeg Folk Festival. She has also supported some of America's most notable performers including The Band, Los Lobos, Guy Clark, and Lucinda Williams. Something In The Water offers up a slice of Chris Webster's life and a healthy portion of her sould; from the swampy-funk of the title tune, "Something In The Water", to the smokey, Ray Charles-esque "Brightstar" (penned by Verve recording artist Jackie Greene). She then brings you back around to the carefree R&B classic by James and Bobby Purify, "I'm Your Puppet".

Webster continues to travel the country adding to her expanding scrapbook of musical memories. Something In The Water is your chance to share these memories. It's your e-ticket to ride and emotional roller coaster that will leave you breathless and satisfied.

At the tender age of 4, Chris Webster stood on her mothers old piano bench and began belting our show tunes. It was clear what path this young lady would take in life. Time has passed and Ms. Webster has surely evolved. This rettrospective serves as a companion piece to Webster's other new release "Something in the Water." "my name is Christine" is not a "best of" or "greatest hits." It's a scrapbook of music that Chris has recorded through the years with her friends and former bands (Mumbo Gumbo, the Websters) as well as some never-before-heard tunes, all of which have helped shape her musical life through the years that have led up to her current solo career. The songs were personally chosen by Chris to serve as signposts in her musical, personal and emotional growth.

"my name is Christine" features an amazing array of styles ranging from traditional bluegrass ("Locks and Bolts") to the beautiful standard "Since I Fell For You," and the wacky self-penned "That Chick is Twisted." You'll find the much requested new fan favorite recorded in 2006, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World." Chris' astounding ability to smoothly cross all musical lines makes this a remarkable collection.

Now Playing

"Now Playing" was recorded live at the old Palms Playhouse, but it sounds so good you might think it was recorded in some high-fallutin’ studio if not for the enthusiastic applause following each amazing performance. As many times as I’ve seen Chris live, this CD makes me realize it hasn’t been enough. Simply put, Chris Webster is a great songwriter and she has some of the best musicians you could find playing on these tracks, but it is her ability as a vocalist that is her true gift. Chris’ soulful, sultry delivery is great when she’s singing some of her own songs like “Round & Round” or “Love Makes Me Stupid,” but it’s when she takes on songs by others that her artistry is in top form. Her genuine respect and love of her craft is apparent not only in the beauty of her performances, but also in the tasteful selection of songs she covers. Chris sings Rodgers and Hart’s “Blue Moon,” in the woeful, plaintive style of Sun Sessions Elvis (complete with the long, sad howl...) She tackles the old standard “Since I Fell For You,” as if she were channeling Etta James (who isn’t even dead!) Steve Earle’s “Valentine’s Day” has NEVER sounded better, and for good measure she throws in a couple of songs from British singer/songwriter Clive Gregson, whose “It’s All Just Talk,” is one of the album’s best moments.

Drive
“Some seven years ago, Mumbo Gumbo’s Chris Webster released her debut solo CD "Drive", which in my mind set a high-water mark for local releases rivaled by very few since. Leave it to Chris to non-chalantly offer up her latest release and nudge that water mark ever higher.
